For once, Kate Johnson was more confident and cheerful than she had been in past thirty summers. For this 32-year-old sales agent, life had changed. And as she stood there waiting for her fiancé, images from her life till then kept flashing in her mind’s eye. Right from Kindergarten, she had been the heaviest kid around. “Heavy my whole life”, she would quip. But things changed when she underwent bariatric surgery. She lost 128 pounds in less than a year…

Why Weight?
Not everyone is as happy with the results of popular weight loss programs. Rachel, a musician by profession, often lamented, “I had tried just about everything to lose weight: Weight Watchers, Overeaters Anonymous - but nothing ever worked. Leaping from one program to another, I have ended up putting on more weight. Probably I have to live with the fact that I’m obese”. Fortunately, for people like Rachel, bariatric surgery is a bright beam of hope in this battle against bulge. Other popular treatments now include liposuction, tummy tuck, lap band surgery, smartlipo and body contouring.

Go Figure!
There are various types of Bariatric surgeries and you can consult your doctor to know which surgery will give you the best results. The two main surgical options are:

  • Gastric bypass surgery: Gastric bypass surgery diverts food from the stomach that is reduced to the size of a golf ball using surgical staples or a plastic band. A restrictive surgery, it limits the amount of food you can eat at one go. And if you can't eat a lot, you will lose weight.
  • The Roux-en-Y procedure: This surgery puts your body through some ‘plumbing’ to bypass the small intestine. Most of the food that is eaten heads straight to the large intestine, from where it's excreted as waste.
A blessing in disguise – the common side-effect of these surgeries is that your stomach can not digest refined sugar and fats. Wow! You automatically stay away from calories. All these procedures have proven results in weight loss, but it’s the gastric bypass surgery which earns brownie points for making more pounds come off and quicker.

Guaranteed Weight Loss?
A study conducted at the University of Minnesota reported extreme weight loss in morbidly obese people after they underwent bariatric surgery. Patients with diabetes, high cholesterol, heart and blood vessel disease, high blood pressure and sleep apnea have experienced great improvement and in some cases, a complete resolution of their weight problems.

However, weight reduction surgery is a not a shortcut to svelte. The first few years are a real high, with everyone congratulating you on the weight loss. Then after about three years, the euphoria wanes and some of the old bad habits start to kick in. And unfortunately, a lot of people go through these surgeries only to gain back the weight they had lost. Remember: it is not a fix-all. It is a tool and if you abuse the tool, you are going to come back a full circle.

Your post surgery efforts should include: transition to a healthy lifestyle; regular meetings with your nutritionist to help maintain a healthy balance of carbs, fats and calories; and adherence to your diet and exercise guidelines. Also, if you belong to the ‘food drives me” club, it’s time to change your membership. Emotional eaters should consult a psychologist to avoid going back to their original selves. Bariatric surgery can help you physically - not psychologically.

It’s amazing to be fit. Go ahead, weigh your options and take the plunge!
